There has only been one female recipient of the Best Director Academy Award.

...

ONE.

It was Kathryn Bigelow for 'The Hurt Locker' and yes, to say that it was well-deserved  is an understatement but come on Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science, just one woman!?!

Also, only four women have been nominated for the award - Lina Wertmüller, Jane Campion, Sofia Coppola and the aforementioned winner.

Le sigh.

Why do you care? Why do I care?

Well I want to be a director, and it sucks to realise that Hollywood or whoever else is in charge, doesn't recognise or appreciate or give female directors the same chances they do with their male counterparts.

Anyway, I thank God that I've realised that awards or organisations do not validate the works of women and while the Academy has only recognised the directorial efforts of four women, we all continue to slay and kick ass regardless.

Debra Granik - Winter's Bone
Lisa Cholodenko - The Kids Are All Right
Gurinder Chadha - Bend It Like Beckham
Penelope Spheeris - Wayne's World
Catherine Hardwicke - Twilight, Thirteen
Amy Heckerling - Clueless
Sofia Coppola - Lost in Translation, The Virgin Suicides

To name a few!!

Soon my name will be added to the list and all I ask is that you wait patiently *smiles widely*

Well, until we meet again
London Grace (or just Grace) xoxox
