Suicide Squad Collab with OreViews !
13:31So I have something very different and exciting for you beautiful people.
*imagine I have Hans Zimmer on stand by*
Alright, Hans, you know what to do.
*a pulsating score rises as Hans waves his arms to orchestra, doing his thang*
A collaboration!
It's my first on the blog and I am very happy to be sharing it with my friend and fellow blogger, Ore who writes over here.
So, as the title says, this collab is based on Suicide Squad.

Now, I don't know about you guys but I have been waiting for the release of SS for a really long time, so when I finally started seeing promo and character posters, I was ecstatic. I mean, there's a trailer set to Queen for crying out loud.
Trusty IMDB had rated it 9/10 - although granted, this was courtesy of literally one person.
Then one day in July, I came across an article detailing how to deal with the panning of Suicide Squad when you are a massive fan.
. . .
I didn't want to read any reviews but then I couldn't help it. Review after review took the time to detail how much they hated the film.
I had enough of reading and just decided to watch the film and make up my own mind and so did Ore, so we popped off - along with her sister - to the O2 and settled in at the super screen to begin.

Two plus hours later, and guess what:
WE DAMN LIKED THE FILM.
Ore, take it away.
Ore: Margot Robbie and Will Smith are centre stage - but this isn't a bad thing..
Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn (The Joker's deranged lover) and Will Smith as Deadshot (assassin for the rich slash doting father) carry the film. That's without a doubt. They get all the best lines, they're believable in their roles and they're centre stage throughout the movie. But this isn't necessarily a negative. The way the film is set up, it's as if they're meant to be prioritised, with more focus on their backstories and maximum screen time. It is a crying shame that the Jared Leto as the Joker doesn't feature as much as fans would've liked/as much as the trailer had us believe he would (not least because in every scene he does feature in, he's fantastic). Like we mentioned. The film isn't perfect. (We're still questioning the casting of Cara Delevigne as The Enchantress too, don't worry).
But the scenes that we do get with the talent of the main actors that we're given are wildly enjoyable and make for a decent film overall.
2. The film gives us back stories for the characters..
..except Slingshot. He's killed within the first half hour and much isn't really said about him. But as for the rest of the Suicide Squad, we learn more about them and their colourful histories. Admittedly some of them are silly (Killer Croc is super weird and Boomerang Dan's whole characterisation is far fetched to say the least).
Me: A lot of Suicide Squad's characterisation is based off stereotypes. For instance, there's Killer Croc who in case you weren't sure, is black. In the words of Allen Payne, he's 'black y'all, blackety black yo' and for good measure, also watches BET.
Then there's Boomerang who is from Namibia. Nah, of course, he's Australian, who is also barely intelligible . After one of his first pieces of dialogue, Ore and I turned to each other, both with a 'what the heck did he just say' face?
These stereotypes weren't necessarily a bad thing, in fact at times they were quite funny. Mostly though, they were a bit cringe but considering the people they affected were side characters, it wasn't so distracting.
2. That leads me to another point - screen time is not evenly shared at all.
Me: Star power seems to take precedence with Will Smith aka Deadshot taking command over the whole group - including actual commander Rick Flag - and rising star Margot Robbie is given a second lead as Harley Quinn. I guess in comparison to Karen Fukuhara's Katana, that's not a shock but when you realise that Jared Leto as THE JOKER had probably no more than ten minutes screen time... Well that just makes you say damn.
Ore: Yeah, even Jared Leto spoke about how little his screen time ended up being and even he wasn't happy about it. Him barely being in the film was pretty disappointing but regardless he was amazing in his role anyway.

3. I think the main reason why people were not massive fans of SS is because it wasn't the dark, gritty R rated film that they expected.
Me: With a 15 rating (that really could have been a 12) the expected violence, bad language etc was heavily diluted.

That is not the SS that is in cinemas right now. I laughed nearly throughout the movie, I don't think I was ever on edge, and honestly, that was disappointing. But would I go as far as to say the whole film was?
No way.
All in all this film is not perfect but it is definitely enjoyable. I'd say that Viola Davis (pretty much perfection and the most evil character), Margot Robbie and Will Smith are standouts, the visuals are sometimes fantastic, sometimes not and the soundtrack/score bangs.
But you give it a try and see for yourself.
Shalla to Ore and please make sure to check out her page!
Much love x
