Last Films in Halifax

Okay so Gone Girl nearly ended up being the last film of the year I watched and if you've watched Gone Girl then you know  that's a bit of a messed up film to end the year on.

But before I went to bed, I ended up watching Girl, Interrupted which if you've watched then you know that's not the happiest film to end the year on either!

But although both dodgy in their own right, they are also both sick films.
Ha, maybe I should use fantastic instead.

I had avoided Gone Girl the book like a fire because I just wasn't down to read a scary book. The Ghostbusters series from childhood was traumatising enough, thank you very much.
Then the film came out and I also said heck no, I don't wanna watch that.
But good reviews always pull me in like pounded yam with okra and stew after a long day, so after a chat with friends on Christmas Day about how banging the film was, I said let me just watch the film.

At this point I am obliged to inform you that from this point on spoilers about Gone Girl may/will occur.

First off let me say, chicks be crazy.
Or at least some chicks be crazy.
But one chick, Amy Elliott-Dunne definitely be crazy!

Gone Girl is a thriller, dealing with the disappearance of said crazy woman Amy and whether or not her husband, Nick, has anything to with it.
Simple enough plot, which makes a great thriller. The whole whodunit plot from every soap there ever was.

As I watched, I played detective as one does, and as much as I knew Nick didn't kill or abduct his wife, I don't think I was ever really on his side. I didn't particularly like him, and it wasn't even Ben Affleck's acting because I'm sure he captured the novel Nick perfectly, but I was always wary of Nick.
He finds out his wife is missing and he seemed so, meh. Like he was performing for the detectives and didn't really care (which he later admitted to, so well done Detective Grace).

I really only liked Margo, Nick's twin sister. She rocked, and I felt like that's how I would have been (minus all her swearing). She was a real character who wasn't afraid to call Amy out on her bull.

Anyway, the big reveal came like an hour into the film *MAHOOSIVE SPOILER ALERT* - Amy had abducted herself.
I know! What?!

Amy had literally planned the whole thing, even poured so much of her blood around the house to make it believable and everything. She is crazy personified.

But what really gets me, is that her craziness is never explained. It's never justified. She's a sociopath, a psychopath, mentally deranged and that's just it. No reason behind it.
And that's what's scary.

I wish I could have shown you all he facial expressions I made throughout the film but they were all generally 'what the actual heck?!' or 'I just don't understand why this crazy is happening' faces.

What I will say is that Gone Girl has a seriously strong cast, with Ben Affleck, Carrie Coon, Tyler Perry, Neil Patrick Harris, Kim Dickens and Patrick Fugit all giving great performances but Rosamund Pike as Amy obviously being the stand out. And seeing as she's already been nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama (mouthful), I'm sure she's going to get the award recognition that she deserves.

Although the film was all very entertaining, no one wants this to happen to them, so we come against every Amy Elliott-Dunne in life, in the name of Jesus.
Let the church say amen.

• My title makes me giggle.
